¶ Exit Standard
By the end of this block players should demonstrate the following during short game play:
- Uses the wall to delay and protect possession
- Recognizes the corner as a low-risk area
- Supports teammates early in the corner
- Maintains structure near the goal line
- Exits the wall or corner with control
Coach Note: The corner is generally a low-risk area. Defenders will often force the puck into the corner to reduce scoring threat. Players must understand how to behave correctly in both attacking and defending corner situations, and how to use the wall to move the puck safely.
The attacking corner is a low-scoring area. Defenders will often force the puck here because it is a safer zone.
When in the corner, attackers should focus on maintaining control and finding a safe exit rather than forcing play.
Ways to Exit the Corner:
- Back Wall Pressure: Move the puck up the back wall while applying pressure to push play out of the corner.
- Small Swing: Use a short movement away from the corner to create a new attacking angle toward goal.
Coaching Focus:
- Do not force play from the corner
- Maintain possession under pressure
- Look for safe exit options
The defending corner is a safe area. When under pressure, defenders should move the puck into the corner to reduce risk.
Defenders must organize and support each other to maintain structure and regain possession.
Defensive Structure:
- 2–3 player rotation along the back wall
- One player pressures the puck
- Other defenders support and protect space
Forward Support:
- Forwards must track back to help
- Position on side walls
- Get between attackers and passing lanes
Once possession is regained, the team should only attack if structure is ready. Do not rush the transition.
Coaching Focus:
- Use the corner to reduce pressure
- Maintain defensive structure
- Support early and stay connected
The wall can be used to move the puck safely past defenders and maintain possession.
- Play the puck up the wall on the outside of the defender
- Use the wall to avoid direct pressure
- Keep the puck in safe space
Support Behavior:
- Forward positions behind the defender
- Ready to receive the puck
- Ready to back-pick if the puck does not pass cleanly
Coaching Focus:
- Use the wall instead of forcing play inside
- Support must be ready early
- Maintain control when moving the puck up the wall
- Use the corner
- Be patient
- Back wall
- Swing out
- Support early
- Use the wall
- Outside space
