Players spend a significant amount of time kicking along the bottom of the pool, either following the play or simply swimming to their desired position. When swimming along the bottom, it is best to only use flutter kick as this allows players to keep their hips close to the playing surface and keep their torso in a strong position.
How to flutter kick:
Flutter kick should originate in the hips, the knees should hardly bend, and the toes should be pointed. When positioned parallel to the bottom of the pool, alternate pushing one leg downwards, then the other, raising the first leg as the second pushes down.
Flutter kick is preferable to dolphin kick when kicking on the bottom because dolphin kick (which originates at the chest) will raise the torso off the bottom and make it much more difficult to maintain ideal body position.
