Redirecting opponents is a very useful skill. Getting a player to swim a specific direction can make it easier to steal the puck from them as they swim past. Also, even if players can't get possession of the puck, stopping an opponent from swimming where they wanted to go can be quite helpful in preventing the opponents from using their ideal strategy.

Players can redirect an opponent by setting up on the bottom in a position that makes one direction undesirable for the opponent to go to, convincing them to go the other way. Players can do this by angling their bodies so that there is more space to one side of them, making that side seem more appealing for the opponent. The player then has their shoulders turned to follow the puck, keeping them in a good position to get the puck.
When attempting to redirect an opponent by setting up on the bottom and getting them to swim around, players must engage the puck if that player still swims into them. If the player simply stays on the bottom and blocks the opponents path without going for the puck, this will be an obstruction foul (blocking).
