Players have some choices in how they swim mid water. Unlike kicking at the bottom, kicking mid water gives players more space, and therefore more options. The first option is to flutter kick, just as a player would when swimming along the bottom. The other option is to dolphin kick.
How to dolphin kick:
Dolphin kick originates in the chest, then moves down the body in a sort of wave motion. Begin with pushing the chest down and release it while pushing the hips down, then release the hips while pushing the chest down again to start the second kick. The feet should snap down at the end of each kick motion. Make sure to engage the core to better control the wave motion of the torso.

Off the strike many players follow mid water until the direction of the puck is determined and they then drop all the way to the bottom.
